Fix the specification, then compare

Two quotes for the same pipe diameter can differ by a third because one is SDR17 and the other SDR11. Fix the standard first (EN 12201 for PE100, a PN class for PVC-U pressure pipe), then the diameter, the wall thickness and the length per bar or coil. Only after that do suppliers sit on the same line for comparison.

Buying granules and compound

If you feed your own extrusion or injection line, ask for the polymer grade with its melt flow index and density, and confirm whether the lot is virgin or reprocessed. Request a sample before the first container, and check that bag weight and pallet pattern suit what your warehouse and forklifts can handle on arrival.

Fittings and the joining method

A pipe order is only useful with the matching joining system. Decide early between butt fusion and electrofusion couplers, and order elbows, tees, flange adaptors and saddles in the same lot so the sizes actually meet on site. Ask the supplier to send the welding parameters for the grade you buy.

Sun, heat and food contact

Ask what protects the goods outdoors: black PE pipe and tanks carry carbon black for that reason, while white or coloured sheet and profile need a declared UV stabiliser. For rubber hose, check working pressure, inner bore and temperature range against your application. For anything touching food or drinking water, request the declaration of compliance.

Volume, freight and payment

Granules are quoted per tonne and follow commodity and currency movements, so ask how long the price holds. Pipe and profile are bulky, so freight per tonne weighs more than a small ex-works gap; ask for the loading plan and the metres that fit a 20' or a 40' container. First orders usually run on an L/C or a part advance by TT.
