Sourcing apparel & textiles from Türkiye: what African buyers should know
Türkiye is the world's fifth-largest apparel exporter and the closest full-chain garment industry to Africa: yarn, fabric, dyeing, cut-make-trim and finishing under one roof, often in one city.
Why source apparel from Türkiye
Three practical reasons. Proximity: a container from Mersin or Istanbul reaches Lagos, Tema or Abidjan in 14–21 days, against 35–45 days from East Asia, which lets you order smaller lots more often and hold less stock. Vertical integration: most Turkish mills spin, weave or knit, dye and sew domestically, so specification changes are handled in one place and fabric quality is traceable. EU-standard compliance: Turkish factories have supplied European retailers for decades, so REACH-compliant dyes, size grading and labelling to EU norms are the default, not an upcharge.
Denizli specialises in towels and home textiles, Bursa in woven and knit fabrics, Istanbul (Merter, Osmanbey, Zeytinburnu) in fashion garments and wholesale, Gaziantep and Kahramanmaraş in yarn, and İzmir and Adana in denim and sportswear.
Typical MOQ & pricing
Minimum order quantities are lower than in Asia because factories are used to European fast-fashion reorders. Expect roughly:
Indicative FOB Türkiye figures, mid-2026, for private-label basics — not live quotes. Stock (ready-made) goods from Istanbul wholesalers carry no MOQ but 15–30% higher unit prices.
Lead times & shipping to Africa
Production for a private-label order runs 30–45 days after sample approval; stock goods ship in 3–7 days. Sea freight from Mersin, Ambarlı (Istanbul) or İzmir: 14–21 days to West Africa (Lagos, Tema, Abidjan, Dakar), 18–25 days to Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, 10–14 days to Casablanca and Alexandria. Most suppliers quote FOB; ask for CIF if you have no forwarder yet. Air freight to Lagos or Nairobi takes 3–5 days and makes sense for samples and orders under 300 kg.
Budget for a 20-foot container of folded garments holding roughly 25,000–35,000 pieces; a 40-foot high-cube roughly doubles that. Consolidated LCL shipments are widely available from Istanbul for orders that do not fill a container.
Certifications to ask for
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 tests the finished textile for harmful substances and is the baseline for anything worn against the skin, especially kids' and baby wear. GOTS certifies organic fibre content and the processing chain; only ask for it if you are selling an organic claim. BSCI (amfori) is a social-compliance audit of the factory, not the product — relevant if your own customers are institutions or retailers. For uniforms and workwear, ask for EN ISO 13688 and any flame-retardant or hi-vis standard the end user requires. Request the certificate PDF and check the licence number on the issuer's public database; a certificate for the fabric mill does not automatically cover the garment factory.
Common pitfalls
- Confirming an order from photos only. Always approve a physical pre-production sample and a lab dip for colour; most suppliers ship samples by courier in 3–5 days.
- Assuming a wholesaler is a manufacturer. Istanbul has thousands of traders; if you need private label or a specific fabric weight, filter for factories and ask for the production address.
- Ignoring size charts. Turkish sizing follows EU grading; give your target measurements in centimetres per size rather than S/M/L.
- Paying 100% upfront to an unverified account. Standard terms are 30–50% deposit and the balance against the bill of lading copy; keep messages on Tafric so disputes have a record.
- Forgetting destination rules. Nigeria requires SONCAP for some textiles, Ghana requires a GSA conformity route, and several countries restrict second-hand clothing imports; confirm HS codes with your clearing agent before ordering.
